notes on style code

One thing that often is not mentioned in the practicals of stylesheets is that it often matters where the style information is stored. Whether a browser properly handles CSS properties depends on whether the style definitions are in an external file, defined inline for an element, or in a block of style information. My examples often are made with external stylesheets. But, I have to say, I get lazy sometimes and embed the style information on the page.

Unfortunately, it sometimes matters.

If you have trouble reproducing effects, try defining the style information in a different way. As time permits, I'll try different definitions for each style problem I've encountered.

corrected code

If you're a Netscape Navigator user, you've probably noticed that until 4/27/00 the pink boxes that seemingly allow you to reach the top of the document from the end of each section were not working. The boxes are created with styles, and the combination of a DIV tag and the anchor tag just does not work in NN. For a full treatment, go to things NN won't do: name anchor references. The problem has been fixed by altering how the boxes are generated.

versions

The Version 2.0 release of this site was posted on 5/5/00. This update has reduced gif files, side-by-side pictorial comparisons, and a few textual alterations. This version is specifically targeted to the 800 and higher resolution viewer. Due to the size of the pictures, horizontal scrolling is required in 640 resolution.

Version 3.0 saw gif sizes reduced in terms of file size and viewing size. The pictures were also formatted with flexible tables.

The Version 4.0 release was created 7/28/00. It automates sections of each page with JavaScript and has a complete color redesign. It also is built with 800 resolution in mind, though it has an acceptable look at 640.

This version also has enhanced readability: the page margins are squeezed down and the page colors more muted. The colors also work together better. There were many minor code fixes.

changes to this section

The special notes section was moved off the start page and given its own area on 05/21/00 to allow this section to grow and to shrink the start page. This will allow me to provide more detailed commentary on the site without cluttering up the start page.
